The Commission was created by the Greenham and Crookham Commons Act 2002. It consists of twenty Commissioners. Ten are elected from among the registered commoners, and ten are appointed by bodies with an interest in the management of the commons.
Powers and duties of the Commission
The G&CC Act 2002 gives the Commission the following responsiblities
- Creating and maintaining a register of commoners and common rights
- Determining the maximum number of animals which should be grazed on the commons each year
- Consulatation, including power of veto in some areas, with WBC over management matters
Meetings
Normal business meetings are held four times a year. Members of the public may attend, and with certain provisos speak at, Commission meetings. The Commission can also be contacted by e-mail.
Committees of the Commission
- Governance Committee (commoners' rights, boundaries, public access, events, etc.)
- Conservation Management Committee (grazing numbers, any other conservation matters)
- Planning Committee (scrutiny of and response to planning applications with potential impacts on the commons)
